- Locate the RTF file you want to open (usually ending in
.rtf
). - Right-click the file and select Open with > WordPad (or simply double-click the file if WordPad is set as the default for RTF files).
Step 2: Copy the Content
- Once the RTF file is open in WordPad, press
Ctrl + A
to select all the content. - Press
Ctrl + C
to copy the selected content.
Step 3: Open Notepad

Step 4: Paste the Content into Notepad
- In the open Notepad window, press
Ctrl + V
to paste the content from the RTF file into Notepad. - You’ll notice that any Rich Text formatting (like bold, italics, fonts, or colors) will be removed, as Notepad only supports plain text.
Step 5: Save as a TXT File
- Once the content is pasted into Notepad, go to File > Save As.
- In the Save As dialog, choose a location to save the file.
- In the Save as type dropdown, select All Files and give the file a .txt extension (e.g.,
myfile.txt
). - Click Save.
Step 6: Verify the File
- Navigate to the location where you saved the file and open the
.txt
file in Notepad to verify the content has been saved as plain text.
Important Notes:
- Formatting Loss: Opening an RTF file in Notepad will strip away all formatting (such as bold, italics, fonts, or colors). Only plain text will remain.
- Editing RTF: If you want to keep the rich text formatting, consider opening the RTF file in WordPad or a word processor like Microsoft Word. Notepad does not support formatting features like RTF does.
